Week #3: Online Learning

Image
This week in class we had the privilege to have another host come and give us a presentation. This time we had Chris, whos last name I cannot remember, who was a directer of online course development. In this class we got to talk about the benefits (and the negatives) of education from a far. I have never actually taken a course online or distantly, so it was interesting to think from their perspectives. So the obvious and main benefit for web based courses is that you have access to the course content from anywhere. As long as you have internet connection you should be good to go. There is also likely options to download the courses contents while having internet, so that you can access important stuff from it with or without internet connection. Having courses online opens up many different options for lectures. These online courses can be synchronous  - which is a fancy term to represent an online class where the students and the teacher need to be on at the same time to have ...

Tech Task #1: My Digital Footprint

Image
In this tech assignment, we were appointed the task of looking at our own digital footprint. What this means is to look at what pops up when you google ourselves, what is our online identity? Key thing here is to not have any surprises of things associated with your name on the world wide web. This is especially important for us looking for jobs this year because employers will look up your digital identity to make sure you are professional in and out of the classroom. As a teacher, you are held to a higher standard in society just as police officers, firefighters, and political leaders are. Holding yourself to a higher standard means to accept the fact that you cannot be influenced by people with no or little direction in their lives. This means to be more mature and professional in the way you act around people, talk to people, and present yourself. So before you make that post with little clothing on, or a beer in your hand - be sure to think of what it might do to your online image...

Week 2: Kristen Thompson

Image
Good day friends, this week in Internet for Ed we had our first quest speaker come in! Her name was Kristen Thompson, who works as a coordinator of ICT at the Mountain View School Division. We explored various topics of technology in the classroom. We jumped into thought provoking conversations involving AI/Robots taking over classrooms for teachers. We discussed the pros and cons of the theoretical metallic take-over. Kristen also shared some great resources with the idea of using technology to help get some things done quickly and more efficient. In brief, the main (and basically the only) con about the classroom robot take over would be the lack of connection/relationship building with students. This was all under the assumption that robots were not crazy futuristic and so human-like that you couldn't differentiate between a genuine human being and an artificial intelligent figure. In talking about this theoretical take-over, spawned the question of : "what are things t...

My "Intro to Blogging" blog.......

This is my first blog, and some people in class may not know much about me, so I guess I should take this opportunity to say a little about myself. My name is Drew Jones. I am in my last year (hopefully) in the Education after Degree program at Brandon University. I am a 25 year old dude whos life revolves around sports, fitness, friends, the discovery of new music, and the odd beer here and there. I have put a considerable amount of time in my life into the crafts of many sports such as basketball, volleyball, golf, tennis, football, and hockey. Lately, I have devoted most of my sport specific time into golf and volleyball as I still play them competitively. Golf has given me some cool opportunities as of late, just this past summer I was able to travel to Calgary and Halifax for golf tournaments. I'm excited for whats to come this summer on the golf course, and the snow can't melt away fast enough! I work part time as an official in high school basketball for the B...
