Tech Task #3 - Dan Meyer & His Blog About Math Education

Hello classmates and Mike,

In this tech task we were appointed the deed of following a blog and to talk a little bit about it. I chose to follow Dan Meyer and his blog called "dy/dan". I simply googled "Math and Science teacher blogs" and he was a top recommendation from many sites.

About Dan

Dan taught high school math to students who didn’t like high school math. He is a big advocate for better math instruction, and has had the opportunity to talk about it on large stages. He has been on television on CNN, "Good Morning America", "Everyday With Rachel Ray", and hosted a chat with TED.com. He earned a doctorate from Stanford University in math education and is currently the Chief Academic Officer at Desmos. Now working with Desmos, he explores the future of math, technology, and learning. He has worked with teachers internationally and was named one of "Tech & Learning's 30 Leaders of the Future".

I highly recommend checking out his TED Talk that is available on YouTube and TED.com. He talks about the changes he wants to see in math classes in the united states in particular, but in the world as well.

Dan's main points of emphasis on the math world is to help students think more intuitively. That is, to think for themselves and have a feeling or sense that doesn't use rational processes such as facts and data. He wants teachers to problematize questions way more than the textbooks do. Textbooks set the students up to just copy and paste results from question to question as opposed to really thinking about the data in the question and what you will need for the answer.

Dan uses an analogy that I really liked in the TED talk and I wanted to leave you with it. Dan says "any sitcom-sized problems that wrap up in 22 minutes and 3 commercial breaks is no problem worth solving".

I highly recommend any other math people to give Dan a follow! Below are his two links of social media.
