Week #4 Tyler Letkemon & Social Media

We had another guest in this weeks Internet for Education class. This time we had Tyler Letkemon, an English teacher at Vincent Massey. Tyler is a huge supporter of social media and using technology in the classroom. I will delve into some of the techy tools he uses in the classroom on the regular. We also had a zoom conference with Kristen Thompson and another guy that is a principle. Kristen and the principal talked about using social media in the classroom and why they chose to be pro-social media.

One way Tyler incorporates technology into his classroom is by "blurbing". Blurb is an online tool to record writing with the option to publishAt the beginning of each English class students get the opportunity to write for a short period of time from a prompt. This time is used for students to just simply write down any thoughts they can put onto paper about the prompt. Once the students complete their writing, they evaluate the writing. Each person revise and peer edit each others writing. Tyler also let the students come up with their own memes to share with the class which made a fun and personal twist within the classroom. Tyler also uses Quizlet quite frequently to test and challenge students to study and learn on their own. Quizlet is an online platform that has simple learning tools that let you study anything. It has flashcards, games, and other learning tools - all for free! He has created different study sets and games for his students to study with and get competitive with fellow classmates. Students can get access to these study options by URL or QR code.

Thanks for reading folks and until next time,

  1. I also really enjoyed Tyler as a guest speaker. I had used Quizlet before, however I had never used Quizlet Live, I like that it allowed us to split into groups. I think memes are such a modern way of engaging students. I agree, these tools do allow students to engage in a fun and personal way. Great post!! :)
